I am often asked what equipment I use for training and where I get it. I finally decided to put them all in one place.

Some of this equipment I make, some I purchase from Amazon or other vendors.
Please note - if an Amazon link is listed, these are affiliate links and I may earn a slight commission from your purchase. This does not add to your purchase price.

If a product links to "Leashes by Design", this is my company which I have operated for over 20 years. While I primarily braid kangaroo dog leashes, I also do a lot of biothane work, as well as making some of my own training equipment.

26' Flexi Retractable dog leash

The small size works best for almost ALL size dogs for obedience training.

NOTE: This size of Flexi may not be appropriate for your larger breed dog (or dogs with issues) in public settings or on general walks.

I only recommend Flexi leashes with CORDS for training purposes.

These are the tins I use for starting scent discrimination for scent articles. I like to feed my dog directly from the container after they find it, so the size of these rectangles (3.3" x 4.5") work perfect.

Simply poke 6-8 holes in the top of each lid with a large nail and hammer. But make sure you place a small piece of wood under the lid when punching the holes to prevent warping the lid.

Available on Amazon.

Figure 8 cones

These cones are great, as they are collapsible for storage. Even though you only need two cones to work figure 8s, I often use four cones for box work or for figure 8 drills.

Dumbbell - plastic style

To ensure a proper pickup and hold, dumbbells need to be sized specifically for each dog. For plastic style dumbbells, I recommend Mel Stanley.

End color options shown above. He can also do a diagonal split of two colors for an additional charge.

Dumbbell - wood

Most of the time, I use a wood dumbbell. My dogs do not seem to have a strong preference, but these are super sturdy and lightweight.
To ensure a proper pickup and hold, dumbbells need to be sized specifically for each dog. For wood dumbbells, I recommend Phil Klosinski.

* The photo of RemE to the left shows one of Phil's dumbbells in Dynamic Blue, with a decal which I added to each end. Please contact me if you would like to ask about decals.

Utility Gloves

For medium to large breed dogs, I recommend the heavier weight flannel/fleece style of gloves. I use the "medium" size for both of my dogs.

Utility Articles

I currently make my own articles, but before that, I only purchased them from Max 200. I no longer even train metal articles, so I only use wood and leather.

If you only have one set of articles, I also recommend purchasing 1-2 extra pairs that match your set. Tell Max 200 what numbers to put on these extra pairs…I use "0" and "8" (because "7" can sometimes look like a "1" depending on the font).
