Online Class
Puppy Prep for Success

If they were not so much work (and time and money and….), I would have a puppy in my house at all times. I just love training puppies. I love seeing their little brains work and seeing the light bulbs come on. I love teaching them obedience is fun and watching them bouncing out onto the floor, ready to work.

This class will be teaching foundations for many different skills, from Novice through Utility. It will also include how I start my heel work with puppies and young dogs.

All dogs learn differently. For videos, you will be seeing me work with at least four different puppies.

  • Nyxa (Belgian Malinois) - currently four months old
  • Pippa (Border Collie) - currently four months old, owned by a friend. Pippa stayed with me for several days recently and I took many videos to show a different breed. And, wow, was it crazy to train a Malinois and a Border Collie at the same time!
  • Zoey (Belgian Malinois) - currently 3 years old
  • RemE (English Springer Spaniel) - currently 6 years old

All of the skills taught in this class will be done with either shaping or luring, so food will be used a lot. I do think shaping is a very important skill by itself for puppies. However, that being said, not all puppies are great shapers. I have found that this changes with age. For example, Nyxa was not a good shaper until about three months old. But, once the lightbulb came on, she has been much better.

This class is geared towards formal, competition obedience, however I feel the majority of the skills taught can be applied to almost any venue.

Examples of some of the skills taught:

  • Name skills
  • Hand touch and hand push
  • Chin rest
  • "Hold" an object
  • Puppy go-outs and marking
  • Position changes and box work
  • Rear end awareness
  • Collar hold
  • Heel position
  • Circling object (used later for broad jump exercise)
  • Starting nose work for scent discrimination
  • and more!
